Cracked: Why Google’s Ad Label changes colors

Explore the History Behind Changing Shades of Google’s “Ad” Label

Testing and evolving has been a part and parcel of this growing era of digitization. Google also started testing on its ‘Ad label’ January this year and it has now been successfully rolling out. This latest white label with green test and outline replace the previous bold green label that was launched in 2016. By the end of 2019, Google is ready with its latest ad label which will be of black colour with white background.

But you must be pondering, as to what must be the reason behind these successive changes in the label. Google officially revealed that:

“After experimenting with a new search ad label with a green outline, we’ve decided to roll it out. The new ad label is more legible and continues to make our results page easier to read for our users with a clear indication of our ad labelling.”

Adding to this, they said that this change in colour is implemented keeping in mind the idea to make paid ads less distinguishing from organic listings on the page. Google just thrives to make the appearance of the ads and ad labels more and more advanced each day, to be able to increase the revenue. An ad must capture the attention of the visitor, thus making the idea of Google Ads a success. So, Google keeps tinkering and changing the UI, and it does work.

As you can see, the ad label has evolved from being showy and overbearing to more professional in the course of two years.

Cracked: Why Google’s Ad Label changes colors

It was noticed in the year 2016, the ad label changes from colour yellow to green, giving high CTR and hike in revenue generation. For the results that trend organically, this was just an attempt of the industry to dominate the search results. But, people prefer organic listings and most of them tend to avoid the ad results.

But if, the paid ad has more relevance to the query than any other organic search, then the chances of them getting clicked hikes. So, big brands are willing to pay their way to reach the top and be seen, if not clicked in the least. But if the quality and relevance of the content are maintained in the paid ads, they work wonders.

The alternative way to rank atop is to earn it through SEO, but we know that takes time because it’s a slow and gradual process.

So the SEO content does not need much ado to get the clicks, while the paid ads (if not optimized) might need better User Experience to be able to yield Higher CTR.

So, Google aims to make a less obvious ad label to get the clicks to paid ads, to generate revenue.

Cracked: Why Google’s Ad Label changes colors

You can see the history of changing colours of the Google Ads Label. By the end of 2019, black coloured ad label will make ad interface even less distinct than the organic results. This might lead to higher CTR and thus higher revenue!
