If you host your own website/blog with the help of a third party, then Wordpress.org can be chosen. For this, you will have to buy the same domain name on that third party sites as well. The URL of your website, in this case, will be like “www.firstwebsite.com”.

But with Wordpress.com, you don’t have to download the software or manage any server. The URL of your website in this case generally looks like this: www.firstwebsite.wordpress.com“. Although this can be changed to “www.firstwebsite.com”, after upgrading to a premium account.

Wait! Don’t feel exclaimed as to which one to choose, we are briefing the pros and cons of each to help you with the decision:

Wordpress.org

Wordpress.com

1. You get full customization controls.1. You get limited customization controls, depending on if your account is paid or free.
2. You have to pay for everything including domain, plugins, themes, code, security and so much more.2. Working with this is comparatively easy and you only have to pay for domain and hosting.
3. Demands a lot of hard work in integration.

But, how does it make all the website development and hosting easy? Let us help you with the following steps:

1. Pick up a plan

This can be chosen only after you have decided whether you will be choosing wordpress.org or wordpress.com. With .org you only have one free plan but you will have to take care of your domain, hosting, plugins, etc. On the contrary, wordpress.com offers 4 plans offering various packages.

2. Choose your Domain Name and Hosting

This is another crucial step. But you need to be very clear with the difference between a domain name and hosting service. A domain name is an address by which your site visitors will be able to locate you on the internet and Hosting service provider is the place where your website will be stored on the internet server. For your website to go “live” hosting service provider is a must.

A domain name looks like this: www.mysite.com and there are a lot of hosting service providers that are available online.  You can create your own domain name at wordpress.org while wordpress.com suggests your domain names as per the plan you choose. However, you will have to find a hosting provider from the third party in both cases.

NOTE: Your hosting provider must be chosen very wisely because it impacts your website’s speed, security, reliability and a lot more.

In addition to that, make sure your service provider fulfils the following criteria:

  1. Supports PHP version 7.2 or higher
  2. MySQL Version 5.6 or higher
  3. Provides HTTPs support

After you are finished choosing the above and completed the billing process, you will gain access to your dashboard, wherein you will be able to install Wordpress.

3. Install Wordpress

If you have chosen a hosting provider outside of WordPress, then you will need to install WordPress to connect your domain to the website. We can stake an example of how all this works with Go daddy.

  1. Log into your GoDaddy account.
  2. Go to ‘Web Hosting’ and then ‘Manage’. You will be taken to a screen that displays your account details.
  3. Go to ‘options and settings’ and you can click on ‘popular apps’ there. Choose Wordpress to begin.
  4. After Wordpress is installed, you will have to answer a few questions regarding the setup that you may answer as per your setup requirements.
  5. In 24 hours, you will be able to see your website installed in your hosting account, about which Go daddy will give you an email confirmation. Now your domain is set up and your Wordpress is installed.
  6. Now, go to ‘My site’ and click on ‘domains’. A select custom domain that you want to make your primary domain and then “make primary” so that your users are actually directed to your site when they search for your URL.
  7. Save the changes with ‘update primary domain’ and you can also verify this by looking for a green checkbox saying “primary domain”.

4. Choose your website theme

Wordpress offers you a good range of layouts, themes, formats, colours, fonts, etc, to choose from. You must prefer creating a custom Wordpress theme so that to make your website look like a visual treat to your visitors.

5. Fill up the Content on your Website

You have to fill in the pages with posts and content. You will get to post in the blog or portfolio section because these things show up your newest website content on top automatically. Pages are static because the content added in them remains in the same place.

If you want to add a new post, just go to Admin page and click “posts” followed by “add new”. Now you can add pictures, title and what not! Save changes and publish and phew! You can even create multiple pages for your website similarly.

6. Customize your website

Always remember, if you want to have a professional website, then most of your pages will be static unlike in the case of a blogger, who will have to keep their pages dynamic so that the newest content comes visible at the top of the website. You can add a navigation bar here, by just going to “appearance” and selection “Menu”. All that is customizable will be there in the options.

7. Install your plug-ins
